The South Coast is one of Iceland's most visited regions. However, with our Offbeat South Iceland itinerary you can explore all the famous attractions but also go off the beaten path and see the lesser travelled places on the South Coast, some part of the uninhabited highlands, the Laki crater fields and the gorgeous Vestmannaeyjar islands.

Below is an 8 day / 7 night sample itinerary to give you a general idea of our Offbeat South Coast trip starting from Keflavik:

Day 1 - Arrival, Waterfalls & Volcanoes

Arrival ay KEF airport. Visit the famous Seljalandsfoss waterfall en route to Thorsmork. Enjoy views of the infamous Eyjafjallajokull volcano and cross a few shallow rivers before taking a special bus transfer over the wicked Krossa river.
Overnight in Thorsmork.

Day 2 - Thorsmork

Spend the day hiking in the breathtaking Thorsmork Nature Reserve. Various hiking options are possible depending on your hiking ability.
Overnight on the South Coast.

Day 3 - Skaftafell National Park & Jokulsarlon

Travel through the deserted Skeidararsandur sands before reaching the stunning Vatnajokull glacier area. Hike to Svartifoss, visit the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon.
Overnight in Hofn.

Day 4 - Laki & more

Explore the Lakagigar fissures formed as a result of the largest eruption in Icelandic history - colourful lava formations, the stunning Fjadrargljufur canyon and Fagrifoss waterfall. Overnight on the South Coast.

Day 5 - South Coast & Puffins

Visit Dyrholaey arch, Skogafoss waterfall, and Reynisfjara black sand beach. Take a ferry over to the volcanic Vestmannaeyjar islands, an often missed gem right off the South Coast.
In the evening drive to Iceland's southernmost and windiest point, the Storhofdi cape, to watch the puffins.

Day 6 - Heimaey & Eldfell

Take an insightful boat tour around the Heimaey main island and hike up to the Eldfell volcano for spectacular views. Take the evening ferry across to the mainland. Overnight on the South Coast.

Day 7 - Landmannalaugar

Drive "behind the mountains" to Landmannalaugar, the pearl of the Icelandic highlands. Take the amazing short hike through the lava fields to Brennisteinsalda before you drive ahead through the Domadalur valley and back to Reykjavik.

Day 8 - Departure

Drop off rental car and departure from KEF airport.

The minimum driver age for is 20 years for smaller cars and 25 years for jeeps. Drivers must bring an international driving licence or a local driving licence written in a Roman script.
